History of Vision Care
Early Foundations
Elaine Styles began delivering optical services at Crisis Open Christmas, laying the foundations for accessible eye care services for people experiencing homelessness.
Vision Care Begins
Four optometrists came together to tackle the lack of accessible eye care for people experiencing homelessness. The idea was inspired by Harinder Paul after witnessing unmet eye care needs during his travels in South Africa.
First Pilot Clinic
Vision Care delivered its first pilot clinic at Crisis Skylight. In one week, 62 people received eye examinations and 58 pairs of glasses were dispensed, confirming the urgent need for the service.
Weekly Clinics Launched
Following the success of the pilot, weekly clinics began at Crisis Skylight, marking the start of Vision Care’s ongoing services.
Charity Status Granted
Vision Care was formally registered as a charity, enabling the organisation to grow its services and reach more people in need.
Olympic Torch Recognition
Vision Care was honoured when a team member was nominated to carry the Olympic torch in recognition of the charity’s work supporting people experiencing homelessness.
10,000 Patients Reached
Vision Care reached a significant milestone of delivering eye care to 10,000 patients, demonstrating the growing demand for accessible services and the impact of the organisation’s work.
BBC Radio 4 Appeal
Vision Care was featured in a BBC Radio 4 Appeal, with a piece written and performed by poet John Hegley, raising national awareness of the importance of accessible eye care.
