If you are a student and would like to get involved in supporting our work, there are lots of activities you could do, either by yourself or with a few friends – or through a student society.

About Student fundraising
Whether you are studying optometry, dispensing optics, another healthcare subject — or any other course — we would love to hear from you if you are interested in supporting our work to reduce inequalities in eye care for people experiencing homelessness.
There are many ways you can raise some funds. You could organise a charity football match against another student society, host a “Healthy Eyes” bake sale during National Eye Health Week, arrange a society trek, plan a Halloween film night, run a Freshers’ quiz or karaoke event, or take part in a sponsored sleep-out for World Homelessness Day. You might also choose to join an overseas sponsored challenge, volunteer at festivals where a donation is made to your chosen charity or set yourself a personal fundraising challenge.
Fundraising is a fantastic way to make a positive difference in your community while bringing society members together through fun and meaningful activities.

As a student there are lots of ways you can get involved in supporting our work, by raising awareness of the inequalities in eyecare and joining us in championing the right to sight for everyone, regardless of their housing situation. You can help by fundraising, volunteering at one of our clinics or helping raise awareness.

Supporter stories
Molly, (pictured) Mohammed & Salma put on a fantastic Eyeball on behalf of UWEye Optometry Society. They chose Vision Care as their charity partner. The committee worked hard to get some fabulous prizes for the raffle from optical and local companies. The raffle raised £852 for Vision Care’s clinics.
Plymouth Opsoc chose Vison Care as their charity partner in 2025-26. The society hosted a film night fundraiser – then supported with their Eyeball raffle.
Through volunteering at Vision Care, I have had the enriching opportunity in experiencing first-hand the drastic improvement in not just vision, but quality of life that accessible eye care can have.
Thus, after engaging in a local public health outreach alongside the Vision Care team, I was keen to promote the charity at UoM.
Along with the rest of the Optometry Society and a brilliant sponsorship by KIND I organised a 13km hike in the Peak District. We trekked and fuelled at a healthy pace to publicise and raise funds to support the under-celebrated, vital efforts Vision Care provides in the community. Half of the money raised was donated to help provide free sight tests and glasses for people in need - a resounding success for all involved!
